Agenda

  1. Agenda item 1

Addressing Social Media–Driven Beauty Standards and Harmful Gender Norms to Promote the Well-Being, Equality, and Empowerment of Women and Girls in Digital Environments

What defines beauty, and who gets to decide it? Beauty standards have shaped the way women and girls perceive themselves for generations, constantly evolving alongside cultural, social, and technological changes. From expectations surrounding body image and appearance to the increasingly narrow ideals presented through media and social platforms, these standards can influence self-esteem, mental well-being, and the way young women and girls understand their own identities. As these expectations continue to evolve, addressing their harmful effects remains an important challenge.

Delegates will have the opportunity to explore the factors that shape beauty standards and their effects on young women and girls, while considering ways to promote healthier, more diverse, and inclusive representations of beauty. The discussion will focus on how societies, institutions, media, and other relevant actors can contribute to creating environments where young women and girls are not defined by unrealistic expectations.
